Understanding Campus Safety

A few weeks ago, there was a report of an active shooter near Mullins Library at the University of Arkansas which led to a campus-wide shut down. Later on, the police reported that there were no gunshots or injuries. This incident reminds us of how important it is to stay informed and aware. 

Immediate Campus Response

Almost as soon as this was reported the campus sent out an alert to all students to stay away from the library. Students were led to safe locations and the campus went into a lockdown. Even though it was found out that it was a hoax, the quick response aided with confusion and made sure of student safety. 

Why the Statistics Matter

Tracking crime is an extremely important tool. These numbers help us learn and prevent. Most universities also make these reports public so the students are able to be prepared and know safety measures. Being informed of the past incidents will help with effectiveness in the future. 

These emergencies, even if they are false are learning lessons. This made students aware of possible procedures, stay informed with alerts on their devices, and understand the role of law enforcement on campus.

All of this will contribute to a safer campus environment. 

The Takeaway

The procedure that the University of Arkansas underwent is an extremely frightening time, but this make the value of learning about safety so much more important. If that was a real call about the suspected shooter, than the students would have executed the steps accordingly and would have been safe. 

Campus crime statistics are so important: preparedness matters just as much as prevention. Everyone needs to do their research, listen to authority, and remain aware to create a safer community.
